Choosing Plumbing Pipes For DIY Plumbing Project -Advice From Toronto Plumbing Contractors

Whether you’re talking to your Toronto plumbing contractors or going to the store to buy your own plumbing supplies for DIY plumbing project, the options in piping seems daunting. Exactly what is the best type of pipe for different jobs?

The answer to that question depends on the project and your needs. There are several types of pipes recommended by our plumbers in Toronto based on their price, ease to work with, and durability.

PVC Pipes

PVC pipe has become incredibly popular in plumbing. It’s very easy to work with and isn’t as bulky as steel pipes.

From the perspective of a homeowner looking to lower the labor element in a job, PCV installs quickly with very little fancy tools necessary. Note that if you see a black pipe that looks like PVC – it’s not. That actually is PVC’s ancestor and one that isn’t used very much in plumbing. In some areas it may not even be allowed by code.

Copper Pipes

A second option in piping that’s common is copper. The great thing about copper is that it doesn’t corrode easily. It is harder to install than PCV due to the need for soldering. Nonetheless, copper will last you a very long time and its very dependable.

Note that there is also an alternative of flexible copper that bends fairly easily so it can fit in hard to reach places. It is not, however, recommended for any area where temperatures get high.

Galvanized Iron Pipes

Another metal option when choosing plumbing pipes is galvanized iron. This is part of nearly every home. Where copper gets soldered, the galvanized pipe screws together via connective joints. Galvanized isn’t recommended any more for new home construction projects. Copper is preferred.

Rubber Pipes

If that weren’t enough options, there are other types of flexible pipe that look, for all purposes, like rubber. When you’re dealing with a home where the piping has been routed in odd ways, this type of plumbing can adapt to the route. It’s also an ideal, inexpensive answer to a new shower line that goes straight down.

When choosing plumbing pipes don’t be afraid to ask questions at the hardware store, or consult your professional plumber contractors. Taras from High Park:
"We have a tenant in our basement appartment and have previously done extensive work with other drain companies. I called one of the companies up and they wanted too much for just coming out and inspecting. I remembered Dmitry because he did a few other plumbing jobs for me very well. I was pleased to hear that he also does camera inspections. Dmitry removed the toilet and pulled out a mass of roots the size of a 20 pound salmon! Dmitry did the camera inspection which revealed that the pipes were absolutely clean and clear of all roots. So where did the roots come from?..."
